The days when children`s glasses were an add-on of the eyewear industry are over. Glasses for kids are cool, fun and durable. We are leading the way with an independent optical shop exclusively for children. What that means is that you can bring your prescription from the doctor of your choice to our dispensary and have the entire selection of frames to choose from instead of the 20-50 frames that most dispensaries have. Shop around until you find one. Fortunately, with new technological advances we can see into the eye much more easily, even the eye of a squirmy one year-old. With this new equipment, the doctor is able to shine a light through the lens and see how well it is refracted inside the eye. A healthy, normal-seeing lens will concentrate the light right onto the retina. It`s the same idea as when you were young and used a magnifying glass to focus the sun`s rays precisely on the sidewalk. If the doctor sees that the focal point is "fuzzy" he will use a series of progressively stronger lenses to sharpen the point of light right onto the retina. The strength of the last lens he uses is the prescription for your child`s glasses. Oversize shoes are funny, oversize glasses are not: In Texas they say bigger is better. Well, not in the case of children`s frames. First and foremost if it looks too big it is too big. A child`s frame should fit right into the eye socket from top to bottom and not expand down the child`s cheek. If a child is allowed to wear a frame like this it will cause unnecessary weight on the nose. I`ve had many parents tell me that they have been told that their child is too big for kids glasses and needs to be in an adult-sized frame. While it is true that there are kids with larger than average heads, putting them in an adult frame would be a terrible mistake. An adult frame would not be as safe and would have side pieces that are 20-30 millimeters too long resulting in a very poor fit. So why would a parent be told that? Frankly, I have found that most places that tell parents this simply don`t have that many children`s glasses. There are plenty of children`s frames in larger sizes to fit these kids.
