David Blight School of Dance
Schedules are set up to accommodate beginners through professional levels for both children and adults. In 1955, Dwight D. Eisenhower was President of the United States, two new musicals opened on Broadway, Guys and Dolls and Kismet, and David and Minna Blight opened the first David Blight School of Dance in the Orpheum Theater Building on South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. After David's discharge from the Army, he was unable to continue his professional career because of a lower back condition. The David Blight School of Dance began with a reputation of quality dance education and has evolved through many stages throughout the years. At the height of the studio chain in the mid-sixties, there were ten studios located throughout Northeastern PA. The four major locations were Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, Scranton and Pittston. Other locations included Towanda, Macadoo, Carbondale and surrounding areas. The David Blight Name became synonymous with dance. The "David Blight Show" with the "Goofus" theme song went on the air with a live variety show in the mid-1950's. The show began on channel 28 then moved to channel 34, a converted radio station on South Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre. Soon after, WNEP Channel 16 took over and moved their studios to the Avoca Airport. "The David Blight Show" aired for thirteen consecutive years, mainly on Sunday afternoons, featuring variety entertainment from students at the many David Blight Studios, as well as guests from the entertainment world. Our Mission At the David Blight School of Dance you are assured that each student is given a program of study depending on the level of ability and progress. Progress is monitored closely in order to advance the student on a continual basis. We are proud to have a great percentage of our student body as members of their school's honor rolls and honor societies. Academic studies are very important to our staff and students. We strive to keep the cost of programs very affordable, however, if you have problems regarding payment, please see the receptionist that she may make arrangements to your satisfaction. Lastly, so that you may see the progress your student is making you will be invited into your students class on a regular basis for observation. For beginner, intermediate and preschoolers, we offer combination classes. Each 45 minute classes is offered in Tap and Jazz or Ballet and Gymnastics. For adults interested in taking a dance class for fun and exercise, we offer a variety of dance classes including Tap and Jazz.. What to Wear... It is very important for dance students to be dressed in appropriate dance attire so that teachers can observe body placement. For private, duo/trio and combination classes, bodysuits and tights are required - any color or style is permissible. For competition lines and groups, bodysuits and tan tights are the dress code. A selection of studio logo printed bodysuits and tights are available for purchase at the studio. Our young ladies are required to pull hair into a neatly secured bun at all times. Young men should wear sweats or shorts for dance class. Lets Show 'em what we learned We at the David Blight School of Dance love to show-off all our students. Throughout the year, we do many hospital, nursing home, fair, school and a variety of community shows. In addition to these shows, we have an informal in-house recital for our combination classes (free of charge for family and friends) and a full production recital in June. Dates for our recital are posted on the studio calendar. Performing in public is a great experience and self-confidence builder for students. Always conduct yourself properly and above anything else smile and have fun! Call us at 570-823-3914
